OUR CLUB
Over a century ago exiled Scots in London formed London Scottish FC which is widely regarded as one of the greatest success stories in British rugby.
In a similar vein, HKRFU set up a new Premiership team with the support of London Scottish, adopting their badge and sharing their colours (blue, white and red) as a mark of that relationship. This involved a group of exiled Scots engaging with the existing Nomads rugby club and building on a relationship with London Scottish and the strong Scottish community in Hong Kong. Hong Kong Scottish was thus formed, and in early April 2011 the club was launched, playing in the world famous Melrose Rugby Sevens – the birthplace of Rugby Sevens. The club entered into the domestic Premiership Division for the 2011/12 season.
Hong Kong Scottish runs four men’s rugby sides: Bloomberg Hong Kong Scottish (1st XV), Hong Kong Scottish Nomads (2nd XV), Hong Kong Scottish Bravehearts (3rd XV) and Hong Kong Scottish Phoenixes (4th XV) and two women’s rugby teams – Hong Kong Scottish Kukris and Sekonders. The club’s home ground in the Shek Kip Mei area of Hong Kong is affectionately known as ‘The Rock’.
The club has grown impressively and now boasts more than 600 members (of whom over 300 are playing members). In addition to rugby, the club is represented by the Stags, Eagles (football), Nessies, Thistles, Pipers, Whiskies, Highlanders, Unicorns (netball) and six junior netball sides. The club has also developed partnerships with local charities including The Hub and Changing Young Lives Foundation. Regular events give players and coaches the opportunity to teach local children from Shek Kip Mei and Sham Shui Po districts about rugby and a healthy lifestyle.
Hong Kong Scottish is sponsored by business news provider Bloomberg – our title sponsor since 2014.

THE BOARD
Roy Kinnear
Chairman
Roy was appointed Chairman of Hong Kong Scottish in 2018, after serving three years as Finance Director. Roy was integral to the setting up of Hong Kong Scottish and has been a stalwart in the Stand from the beginning.
After qualifying as a Scottish Chartered Accountant in Aberdeen, Roy moved to Hong Kong in the early 1990s, taking up a technical position with Price Waterhouse. It wasn’t long until Roy was recruited by Jardine Fleming and through a series of acquisitions and corporate developments, Roy found himself running investment banking and asset management businesses in Bangkok, London and New York before returning to Hong Kong as Chief Operating Officer of JP Morgan Asia Pacific in 2007.
While Roy is firmly committed to growing Hong Kong Scottish, he can be distracted by the exploits of Elgin City, in which he is a proud shareholder. Roy is also Cheiftain of the St Andrews Society.
Stewart Saunders MBE
President
Stewart was one of the driving forces behind the creation of Hong Kong Scottish and served as its first Chairman from 2012 to 2015, before assuming the role of Club President. He has a keen interest in player welfare and can often be found in the middle of the end-of-match huddle.
An engineer by background, Stewart has had a long and distinguished career in the power industry heading up MANWEB and Selectusonline.com before taking the role of Chief Operating Officer of CLP, Hong Kong.
Stewart has a wealth of experience in sports club management including stock car racing and ice hockey, as well as rugby. A native of Kirkcaldy, he also keeps an eye on the Raith Rovers scores.
David A. Bruce
Vice-President
David served as Chairman of Hong Kong Scottish from 2015-2018, after serving three years as Finance Director. He developed his rugby skills at the Royal High School, Edinburgh before refining them at Heriots FP, London Scottish, Dhahran and finally Hong Kong Football Club.
A Hong Kong resident since the late 1980s, David is a Scottish Chartered Accountant who combines professional practice with a bit of teaching and a habit of starting businesses.
David served as Finance Director of the Hong Kong Rugby Union from 1992 to 1996 and was also the Finance Director of the first Sevens World Cup held in Hong Kong in 1997.
Stephen Mercer
Finance Director
Stephen was appointed Finance Director in 2018, after three years of service on the Finance Committee. A keen rugby follower, his playing skills peaked at Belmont House School, Glasgow, where he played fullback for the 1st XV.
Stephen moved to Hong Kong in 1992 and then spent twelve years in Shanghai from 2000, before returning to Hong Kong in 2012. He is a Scottish Chartered Accountant and has spent his entire career with KPMG, where he is a partner.
Previous roles include Head of Audit in both KPMG Hong Kong & KPMG Shanghai and Treasurer of the British Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai.
Bryan Rennie
Board Member
Bryan joined Hong Kong Scottish at the start of the 2014/15 season as outside centre, helping the team attain runners-up position in the Hong Kong Premier League. Bryan was the Club’s General Manager from 2015 until 2019, playing a significant role in the development of the Club.
Schooled in South Africa, Bryan was part of The Sharks Rugby Academy for 3 years before taking up a professional contract in Scotland. He went on to play professionally for The Border Reivers, London Irish, Exeter Chiefs and Bristol Rugby between 2005 and 2014. At representative level he ran out for Scotland A, Barbarians RFC and The Classic Lions.
Bryan is a RFU level 3 coach and a Northumbria University graduate.
Martin Murray
Board Member
Martin, a founding life member, joined the Finance Committee in 2013. With a family pedigree of Scottish Border rugby, and strongly related administrative credentials, there were high hopes of a successful rugby career. However, schooled in Edinburgh he took up hockey and naturally became an accountant instead. Martin moved to Glasgow to qualify as a Scottish Chartered Accountant, followed by a move to Hong Kong with Ernst & Young.
In 1995, Martin moved to the Swire Group where he has held a number of finance related positions in Hong Kong, USA and Australia. Currently, he is Finance Director of Cathay Pacific Airways.
Martin has proved his worth as an after-dinner speaker and is often in demand at rugby dinners, as well as a supper or two at the end of each January.
Ken Morrison
Board Member
Ken has served as a member of the Hong Kong Scottish Finance Committee since 2013. Born in Hong Kong, educated in Scotland and always keen on sport, he played rugby for Scottish Schools, Scottish Universities and Scotland B while also representing Hong Kong in the 1980 Hong Kong Sevens.
Ken holds a law degree from Edinburgh University, qualified as a Scottish Chartered Accountant and is currently Chairman Greater China for the international accounting firm Mazars, as well as Vice Chairman of its Group Governance Council.
Ken also represented Scotland in athletics (Long Jump and Triple Jump) and won the Hong Kong Supersportsman competition held in 1980 and 1981.
